Research Description

We want to understand the amount of comparisons a forensic examiner might have to perform during an investigation. This will help us to more accurately determine how likely a coincidental match (“false positive”) is to occur.

  Basic Information
Participation Restrictions If you are over the age of 19, you may participate in this research.
Time Commitment Participation in this study should require less than 1 hour of your time. This estimate is based on the size of the investigator’s tool collection. The study may take you more or less time depending on the size and organization of your tool collection.
Location Wherever you store your tools.

Procedures

  • Assemble tools which may be used for cutting wires or prying two objects apart.
  • Report descriptive information and measurements for each type of tool
  • (Optional) Provide some basic demographic information and information about your hobbies

Risks & Benefits

Personal:

  • There are no risks to you if you participate in this study.
  • There are no material benefits for participating.
    You will not be compensated for your participation in this study.

Society:

Society will benefit from your participation in this study through increased understanding of how likely forensic toolmark examination methods are to contribute to the conviction of innocent individuals accused of a crime.

The investigator will post results from the study to /r/DIY once the investigation is complete.

Privacy

Reasonable steps will be taken to protect the privacy and the anonymity of your study data; however, in some circumstances we cannot guarantee absolute privacy and/or confidentiality.

We will take the following precautions with your data:

  • We will not collect any individually identifying information.
  • Study records will be stored electronically on university machines and backed up with version control software.
  • At the end of the study, the collected data will be published along with the research paper.

This project is not collecting any Personal Information from you. While you are welcome to withdraw from participation in the research at any time, due to the responses being collected anonymously, it is impossible for investigators to remove individual data.
