Which plot is the most different?
You’ll complete 12 short trials. Each trial shows a lineup of 20 plots. Your goal is to identify the panel that stands out and complete a short task.
How the study works
  1. Click Start the experiment to begin Trial 1.
  2. Each trial shows a lineup of 20 panels (numbered 1–20).
  3. Choose the panel that looks most different .
What you will do in each trial
🎤  Talk aloud
  • Start recording to reveal the lineup.
  • If prompted, allow microphone access
  • Talk through what you notice.
  • Stop recording when you are done
  • Select panel number(s) that looks different.
  • Then click Save & proceed .
🖍  Highlight
  • Click a panel to select it.
  • Click Highlight and draw around features.
  • Mark what supports your choice (gaps, clusters, outliers, spread).
  • Click Save & proceed when finished.
✍  Text summary
  • Select panel number(s) (Selection 1 required).
  • Write 1–2 sentences describing what makes it different.
  • Optional: add a second choice and explain it.
  • Click Save & proceed to continue.

Note: These instructions will also appear on the left side of the page during each trial.

Talk aloud
Instructions
  1. Click Start recording (the lineup will appear).

  3. Speak out loud: Explain which panel seems different and why.
  4. Stop recording when you are done.
  5. Select the panel number that looks different.
  6. Save & proceed to move to the next trial.
What to say (example): “Most panels show a similar pattern, but panel # has more spread at the end and more extreme values. I think # is different.”

Highlight
Instructions

  4. If you have a second choice, select that panel and highlight.
  5. Save & proceed to move to the next trial.
What to highlight: clusters, gaps, unusual spread, outliers, slope/shape changes, or anything that supports your choice.

  2. Explain why in 1–2 sentences (what visual feature stand out?).
  3. Select a second plot if you have another choice and explain why.
  4. Save & proceed to move to the next trial,
Good reasons mention: shape/slope changes, spread differences, clusters, gaps, outliers, or unusual patterns.
